K-12 Students:

During the school year, from September through May, all K-12 students have 33 lessons and 6 piano holidays. Elementary age students begin with 30minute lessons, increasing to 45minutes as the student's skill level develops.  Individualized goals and instructions for home practice are taught and reviewed at each lesson.  The Sharon Renkes Piano Studio is open and affirming, welcoming students and families of all backgrounds. Parents are considered a vital part of our music team and may observe their child's piano lesson at any time.

Please note:

There is no need to cancel a lesson if you feel the student has not practiced enough or has an injury. Lessons can instead become a time to focus on how to practice efficiently for progress, plus a review session of music concepts being emphasized in the student's assignment. Also, the studio lending library has a wide range of music for one hand because sprains and broken bones do happen to budding musicians.

Summer Lessons:

June through August, summer lessons for K-12 students feature 30- or 45-minute lessons, with flexible scheduling and practice expectations to allow for vacations, camps, sports, etc. Attendance at 6-8 summer lessons ensures a steady progression of music skills and provides extra time to focus on a student's specific music interest, sight reading, ensemble playing, improv, composition, ear training, rhythm, theory and music history.

Adult Students:

Adult students always  have flexible scheduling and are billed monthly at the "per each" rate. Weekly lessons are 30, 45, or 60 minutes in length with age-appropriate content that includes specific music the student prefers.

Curriculum:

Students are exposed to a variety of repertoire and music styles, theory, ear training, basic music history, beginning composition and improvisation, along with performance opportunities for sharing music with the studio family and the community. The curriculum is designed as an introduction to the world of music past and present, developing an appreciation for music and artistic skills while learning to play the piano expressively and read music fluently.  Student requests for a favorite keyboard piece, music style or composer are frequently integrated into lesson repertoire.

At Home:

It is expected that students will have an acoustic piano, tuned and in good working condition, or a digital piano with 88 full-sized, fully weighted keys with attached legs or X-stand, sustain pedal, power cord and bench in their homes for daily practice. Keyboards with less than 88 keys are not acceptable. Practice requirements vary according to the student's age and skill level.  Time spent practicing can range from 10 minutes for a young beginning student to 30-60 minutes for an older intermediate to advancing student. All students should practice 5-7 days per week. Elementary aged students do best with an adult or older student nearby for any needed help and supervision. Please monitor your digital piano's volume if the student practices while wearing headphones.

A Note from the Teacher:

Thank you for sharing your children with me and being an active part of our piano team. Your involvement helps each student be successful in learning the skill and language of music. Your interest tells each student they are important, that making music is a valued component of life and will help them learn to live well. Always contact me as soon as possible with any questions or concerns. Together we will find a solution. I love hearing from my piano families.    - Sharon
